Where are they now? $3m yearling Mount Olympus

A handsome son of Rock Of Gibraltar, Mount Olympus was so nice a type that the legendary Gai Waterhouse paid $3,000,000 for him as a yearling.

Unfortunately, his looks weren’t matched by his racing ability and after being moved on to Darren Smith in Newcastle and then moved on again to Canberra’s Norm Gardner, Mount Olympus was retired after 20 career starts for one win and $19,215 in prizemoney.

Martin Guenther, who admired the handsome galloper in his final few starts at Canberra, was quick to put his hand up when he heard Mount Olympus was about to retire.

“I saw him finish near the back on the Acton Track and then a fortnight later, right near the back again.” Guenther said.

“He was a real dud.” Guenther laughed. “But he was such a nice horse, he retired after that run and I’ve had him ever since.”

Now 17 years old, Mount Olympus is still ridden everyday has given Guenther and his family a tremendous amount of joy in their 12 years together.

“We entered him in a Show Hunter ridden by a Child under 17 when my daughter was just 9 because that was the only class we could get them in.

“We thought she had won but they were just pipped on the line. There were the cream of the crop there.”

“We were offered big money for him as a show horse, but we just couldn’t sell him, he meant too much.”

Guenther was offered up to $50,000 for Mount Olympus but by this point, he was a part of the family.

“He’ll be with us forever.”
